LACUNA COIL's ANDREA FERRO Says The Band Have Found Their Own Style
August 3, 2004LACUNA COIL vocalist Andrea Ferro recently spoke to Entertainment Today about the group's current Stateside success and their appearance at this summer's Ozzfest festival. Several excerpts from the interview follow:
On coming home after time away:
"The first month we’re back, it is like we have to tell all the same stories a thousand times, to each friend. But it's cool, because this is something that no Italian band has really experienced before. We had reached a certain point of attention in Italy, and now there is a lot of pride in us (in what we've done). In a way, we kind of represent the country, and our friends are living (all this) through us."
On working with Century Media and the group's musical progression over the years:
"The situation has changed and grown, and now, with Ozzfest, we’ve got an outside PR firm working on our behalf. In fact, we just re-signed with the company, and though we got some offers from some bigger labels, we don’t want a shitty deal where we might get lost. It may take more time (with Century),but so far they've grown as we've grown.
"After all, we want to grow in our own environment, and have a career, not just explode with one big song and then fade away. We found, when touring with ANTHRAX, we gained a lot of old school fans, people who were older (than our regular fans). We got a lot of compliments from them along the way. It's been a great pleasure.
"When we started out, I guess we began in what you'd call the Goth metal category, but we've moved on from that. Just like in life, you go through different phases as you gain a wide open spectrum of life experiences; the games we play, the movies we watch, they all inspire us. You might be mono-directional when you're young, but there are so many aspects of life, both sad and positive, that you have to reflect them all. Like [on] 'Comalies', there is rage and sadness, loyalty and hope. I think it is an honest album, and it really reflects what we do at the moment. And the variety is true to ourselves; we've found our style, but we're not going to do 'Comalies, Part Two'. We're always trying to grow. And all those elements — for instance, I grew up listening to IRON MAIDEN and DEPECHE MODE, DREAM THEATER and MASSIVE ATTACK, among a lot of others — are a part of us."
